Some information about our May Trip.

Place: Dragon’s Tooth Trail – Near Roanoke, Va.

Logistics (there will be a detailed presentation during the Scout Meeting Monday night, 5/13):

Dates (5/17 – 5/19):

Friday
  • 5:00 PM Scouts and Adults arrive at Scout Hut
  • 5:30 PM Bus and Vehicles Depart (bring sack lunch – stop at rest stop in VA to eat on the way)
  • 9:30 PM Arrive and park at Highway 621
  • Scouts hike south about one mile and set up camp at Niday shelter (water available)
  • Sharks hike north about one mile and set up camp

Saturday
  • 7:00AM Breakfast, break camp
  • 8:30AM Hike to Pickle Branch Shelter (water available) – full backpacks – lunch on the trail
  • About 10 miles for Scouts (about 6 hours)
  • About 8 miles for Sharks (???)
  • 3:00pm Set up camp
  • Cook dinner
  • Evening Activity – still to be determined by PLC
  • 10:00pm Lights out. Early to bed. Early to rise
Sunday

  • 5:45AM Breakfast, break camp
  • 6:30AM Scouts hike to parking lot at Highway 624 (6 miles and 5 hours)
  • This section is actually contains the Dragon’s Tooth / Dragon’s Spine and is an extremely beautiful hike!!
  • Sharks ride bus to end point
  • 11:30AM Arrive Parking lot
  • Eat lunch – from the trailer
  • 12:00PM Depart for home
  • 4:00PM Arrive Scout Hut


This is a hiking / backpacking trip!

There will be a competition and prizes for:
  • Individual Scout with the lowest weight backpack.
  • Patrol with lowest averaged weight of packs.


Following are the Patrols (some combinations had to be made due to numbers):

  • Pedro
  • Flying Eagle + Dragon + Raven
  • Road runner + Cobra
  • Sharks
These combinations will be hiking and eating together – please make sure you are meeting this week to discuss menu’s, food purchase and gear requirements (which needs to be turned in by Sunday night, 5/12 to the Quartermaster).


The total number of scouts attending is 20 (including Sharks).
The total number of adults attending is 11.

Please review the attached spreadsheet sent in an email on 5/8 for the breakdown. If anyone has been missed, please let me know ASAP, so I can update the names/numbers. This applies for scouts and adults!

Our Bus Driver for this trip is Mr. Yount.

The trailer will be pulled by Mr. Belk’s truck. Mr. Stafford will shuttle the trailer from the starting point to the mid-point on Saturday and then on to the end-point on Sunday. There will not be access after we arrive on Friday night until lunch on Sunday!

We still need a grubmaster(s) to volunteer for the adults!!


Additional information will be provided during an approximate hour long presentation during Monday night’s scout meeting!!
