We are going to hike at Stone Mountain State Park on Saturday, January 17. We will be hiking the 4.5 mile Stone Mountain Loop Trail, which includes nice views from the granite outcropping, a waterfall and the 19th century homestead. For more information about the park and the trail, see www.ncparks.gov.

We plan to stop for 15 minutes at the visitor's center for a restroom break and to see the displays, including a replica of a Wilkes County still. We will then drive a couple of miles to the Lower Trailhead Parking area and enter the trail. (Restrooms here as well.) The first 30 minutes or so has many stairs and is largely uphill. At the top is a good spot for the patrols to walk out on the granite and observe the surroundings. We will encourage patrols to spend 15 or 20 minutes here.

At the top of the waterfall there is a large wooden platform that will be a good lunch spot. Right down some stairs at the bottom of the waterfall is another good lunch spot. (Each person should bring in his day pack a Nalgene or other water container, lunch and a pre-lunch snack. We may get to the lunch spot after noon, so eat a good breakfast and bring that snack.)

The homestead is large and has a fair bit to see. We will ask all patrols to gather here rather than going on to the parking lot--about 15-20 minutes further down the trail. The boys can see where climbers go up the face of the mountain. When the entire troop is at the homestead, we will proceed to the parking lot.

John H. will provide further information about the park and the surrounding area at the Troop meeting on Jan 12.

Thanks,
Steve
