Backpacking trip to McAfee Knob in Virginia.

The Nov trip is a backpacking trip on a portion of the Appalachian Trail that goes up to McAfee's Knob and Tinker Cliffs. We will enter the trail where it crosses Virginia State Rte 311 in Mason Cove, VA. and exit from the Andy Layne Spur onto State Rte 779 where we will be picked up.

Here is an elevation change map  for  the first section of the hike on Fri night to the camp site and then to McAfee's Knob on Sat. a.m. We go from 2000 feet in the parking lot to 3200 feet on the Knob which we will reach on mid morning on Sat.

After the Knob, we have ~ 6+ miles to the campsite that will bring us off the Knob and then back up to Tinker Cliffs and then back down to the camp site. We will have a strenuous 1 mile climb to Tinker Cliffs that will climb in excess of 800 feet with little or no switch backs (yes it is challenging).

The Sunday a.m. hike out is 3.4 miles. We will retrace our steps for ~ 0.6  miles on the AT  to the Andy Love Spur. The spur is 3.0 miles with an elevation loss of ~ 1000 ft going to back to the parking lot.

The total distance will be 13.5 mile.

The views from McAfee's Knob are spectacular.

The average weather for this weekend is highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 30s. The current forecast for Mason Cove, VA is consistent with that ... but is at a much lower elevation so expect cold weather!
